We hear it all the time – “support local”, “support small businesses”, “businesses are the backbone of our country” … but do we ever really think about what that truly means? Do we think of what our purchases really support?
Small businesses are the foundation of our communities and economy. They create local jobs, keep money circulating within the community, and especially in our industry – they bring unique products, expertise, and essential services we can’t find from large box stores.
Every dollar spent at these small business supports a family, strengthens our communities, and helps maintain independence and the success and culture for years to come. Small business owners are often deeply invested in their communities. They sponsor local events and support charities, they provide us with customized services and help members of the community become hunters and sports shooters, and they add jobs to the market. By supporting small businesses, we not only sustain livelihoods but also preserve innovation and the heart of our local economy.
From our local gun shop that’s been serving generations of hunters, to the ammunition manufacturer who sponsors local youth shooting teams and conservation efforts, to the distributor that brings essential product to the shelves, these businesses are what keep our traditions alive and our economy strong.
But the reality is – right now, they’re struggling.
Government regulations, unworkable restrictions, and unpredictable prohibitions have created an environment where many of these generational, family-run businesses are fighting just to stay open. These businesses have tens of thousands to millions of dollars tied up in unsalable inventory and every new piece of red tape means fewer resources to serve their customers and more uncertainty about the future.
Not only are firearms sales more restrictive now, but ammunition and accessory sales and range visits and participation have decreased at an alarming rate. It’s challenging now for new shooters to get into the sport, and current ones to keep shooting.
Behind the counter are real people. These are the men and women who have dedicated their careers to serving and building a responsible and thriving community. Their work ensures Canadians can keep hunting and shooting.
This holiday season, our support means more than ever. For so many reasons. Instead of shopping big-box or online mass sales platforms, we should consider purchasing our Christmas gifts from small, local businesses.
Buying our hunting gear, range accessories, stocking stuffers, camping, fishing or outdoor apparel from our neighbourhood gun and hunting shop. Picking up a range membership, a new piece of equipment, or even a hunting or firearms course or experience for someone on our list. Every dollar spent locally supports a family and the future of Canada’s lawful hunting and shooting industry and community.
And while we’re at it – grab an extra box of ammo, the family and favourite firearms and hit the range.
This Christmas, shop small. Support local. And celebrate the spirit of community that keeps Canada’s hunting and firearms heritage alive for generations to come.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays – from CSAAA
